Stand up to racism demonstration – Leeds – 11th October 1230pm

At our Branch meeting last week we agreed to support this march and to take our UCU banner along. We will be assembling at the Art Gallery from 12 onwards. Come and march with us! It is important that we have a strong showing, and help to carry the banner will be appreciated. Please note this is a solidarity march against racism and the far right, it is not a confrontation with the far right, so feel free to bring children too.

Stand up to Racism in Leeds has called for a ‘Refugees Welcome, No to the Far Right, No to Reform’ protest in Leeds city center on Saturday 11th October.  We envisage that this will be a celebration of our diversity, bringing together trade unions, community and faith based groups and other organizations in a show of unity and solidarity.

As I’m sure you are aware, over 100,000 people responded to Nazi Tommy Robinson’s call to march through central London on September 13th.  This represents the biggest far right mobilization in British history.  It will give racists and fascists the confidence to go further in boldly spreading their racists lies and hateful speech.  They want to divide the working class by mobilizing anger and misdirecting it against migrants and refugees.  But further than that, they oppose every progressive cause that trade unions stand for, racial, gender and sexual equality and the defense of the rights of oppressed minority groups.

Hope to see as many people as possible on Saturday!
